Many have specialised training in teaching English to speakers of other languages (ESOL).

Staff development 2011

Numeracy – This is a continued focus led by our numeracy leader Mrs Cheung.

Visual Arts:Young Picasso will be taking two professional development sessions with staff this year.

School Curriculum: Although we completed  our school curiculum in 2010, we will be working with Robyn Boswell from Team Solutions to further review and refine this. As part of this process teachers will be looking closely at their practice. Children will be given the opportunity to contribute to “themes” “contexts” and “big questions”.

ESOL – Our specialized ESOL teacher Fiona Oosterbeek runs a language enrichment room. The programme impacts on literacy programmes across the school. Children with English as a second language will receive intensive programmes to support them with their classroom learning. We have two Teacher AIdes who work with Mrs Oosterbeek – Miss Matelina Moliola and Miss Tere Carpentier.

Health Promoting School

We have been a Health Promoting School since 2006. The focii are being sun smart, sun safety, safety at the school gate, fitness and promoting safe behaviour and healthy eating. As part of our healthy eating we have community gardens and nutrition evenings for parents.

We have a healthy lunch menu. The menu has the Heart Foundation Tick and is approved by the school’s Public Health Nurse and Health Promoting Schools Team. The lunch menu changes termly. Children are encouraged to drink water whilst at school.

We are a part of the fruit in schools programme. Fruit is delivered to school twice a week, and given out daily to the children. The fruit is of a high quality, and is different each day.

The school has a very active Health Promoting Schools Team of students who are committed to the promotion of health related areas within the school. In 2007 the Health Promoting School Team successfully planned and implemented paper recycling into Wesley Primary School. In 2010 Wesley became a WasteWise school.

Travelwise

We are a Travel Wise School. We work in conjunction with Travel Wise, ACC and our local community.
