Community
We believe that school is not the only part of the children’s development, but also part of the development of their community and environment.
Home School Partnership
The school looks for opportunities to meet with parents and support the learning of our children. Parents can explore opportunities to enhance learning, both at home and in the community. We have three Home School Partnership Programmes running each term – literacy, numeracy and nutrition. Parents are invited to attend these evenings. It is an opportunity for them to find out about their children’s leaning and to be part of the school’s learning community. Parents can make new friends and feel supported as part of our community.
Mana Health Clinic
We are lucky to have a Mana Health Clinic at Wesley Primary. Tracy McKee-Body is our nurse. Tracy provides a free of charge clinic for children of Wesley Primary, and for members of their family including babies, teenagers, parents and grand parents. The Mana Health Clinic is a base for the Before Five Checks.
No appointments are necessary and free interpreters are available.
You are welcome to make contact with Tracy to talk through any health issues affecting you or your family. Parents are also encouraged and welcome to attend the clinic’s Advisory Group meetings, which are held once a term to share ideas for the clinic.
Tracy can be contacted on 629 6550. Alternatively phone the school office on 620 9261.
SWIS – Social Worker in Schools
Our SWIS worker is Isabella Mirzaabbasi. Isabella may be contacted on 021 442 513 or email isabellam@adhb.govt.nz . We share Isabella with Wesley Intermediate and Owairaka Primary Schools. Isabella works with families and children from all three schools. She is there to provide support in any way she can.
Dental Clinic
A mobile clinic will visit our school once a year. For urgent dental queries please call the Dental Clinic at Edendale School on 846 1765.
Wesley Kindergarten
We have been proud to support the establishment of Wesley Kindergarten on our school site facing O’Donnell Avenue. The kindergarten operates independently from the school and provides an excellent early childhood education for our children. Children who attend kindergarten and early childhood programmes are well prepared with their early foundations of learning. Parents of young children are welcome to go to the kindergarten to ask about enrolment. Also, parents of kindergarten children are most welcome to visit our school.
Home Interaction Programme for Parents and Youngsters (HIPPY)
In 2002 our school entered a partnership with the Pacific Foundation to establish a HIPPY programme.
Doreen Wakefield is the Full Time Coordinator and the Wesley HIPPY Centre is based in Room 16.
HIPPY provides regular home-based tutoring for parents of children in the age range of 3 1/2 to 5 1/2 years. The parents then role-play sessions with their children to support their cognitive growth and skills development. Doreen is always available to meet with interested parents. When the HIPPY children approach their 5th Birthday we are pleased to arrange school and class visits for them.
Duffy Books
This year we are involved in Duffy Books in Homes. We have begun the year with an Assembly to introduce the programme and learn the Duffy Song. At the Assembly 3 children won a wonderful book for being ‘caught being good’. At our fortnightly assemblies children whom have been ‘caught being good’ in regards to reading and literacy will receive the special prize of a book. Every child has selected the titles of books they are interested in for the coming year. We are very excited to be involved in this fantastic programme!
